Why Diana Moran’s Call for Safer Headlights Matters

At Surrey Heath Age Concern, we’re proud to have Diana Moran, broadcaster, advocate, and national treasure, as our Patron. This week, Diana has once again used her voice to shine a light on an issue affecting thousands of older people across the UK: the increasing glare of modern car headlights.

In her recent Express article, Diana highlights a growing concern, one we hear echoed in our own community. Over 89% of drivers say they’ve been dazzled by oncoming headlights, and for many older people, this isn’t just a nuisance, it’s a barrier to independence. As eyesight naturally changes with age, the intense glare from newer headlights can make night driving feel unsafe, even impossible.

Diana writes: “What’s developing, quietly but steadily is a kind of unofficial curfew. One that’s not enforced by government or by law, but by fear.” Her words resonate deeply with us. When older people feel unable to drive after dark, they risk missing out on social events, family time, and community connections, especially during the winter months.

We stand with Diana…

In calling for action, for car manufacturers to consider glare-reduction in their designs, and for regulators to review headlight brightness standards. But most of all, we thank her for using her platform to speak up for those whose voices are too often overlooked.

At SHAC, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, connected, and seen, on the road and in life.

Thank you, Diana, for helping light the way.
